Arizona Contractor License Classifications

To obtain a contractor license in Arizona, you should apply to the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. The registrar issues separate licenses for commercial and residential work. But, there is also a dual license that covers both commercial and residential fields of the construction profession.

With your residential contractor license, you can work on residential structures such as houses, townhouses, condominiums, or cooperative units and apartment complexes of four units or less.

So, commercial contracting is anything other than residential. Moreover, besides these two big classifications, some sub-classifications are listed below.

The description and scope of work are defined by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors.

A-General engineering

In short, this classification allows the licensee to construct or repair:

Fixed works, streets, roads, power, and utility plants, dams, hydroelectric plants, sewage, and waste disposal plants, bridges, tunnels, overpasses, public parks, public right-of-ways

A-4 – Drilling

In short, this classification allows the licensee to drill, including horizontal and vertical drilling or boring, constructing, deepening, repairing, or abandoning wells.

A-5 – Excavating, grading, and oil surfacing

In short, this classification allows the licensee to apply oil surfacing or other similar products. With this license to fulfill the job you can:
Digging, trenching, grading, horizontal boring, compacting, and filling.

A-7 – Piers and foundations

To clarify, this classification allows the licensee to install piers and foundations using concrete, rebar, and other materials common to the industry.

A-9 – Swimming pools

To clarify, this classification allows the licensee to construct, repair and install swimming pools, swimming pool accessories, and spas.

A-11 – Steel and aluminum erection

To sum up, this classification allows the licensee to install and repair architectural and structural steel and aluminum materials.

A-12 – Sewers, drains, and pipe laying

To clarify, this classification allows the licensee to install and repair any project involving sewer access holes, the laying of pipe for storm drains, water and gas lines, irrigation, and sewers.

A-14 – Asphalt paving

To clarify, this classification allows the licensee to install asphalt paving, and all related fine grading on streets, highways, and other similar areas. Also includes the scope of work allowed by the A-15 classification.

A-15 – Seal coating

In short, this classification allows the licensee to apply seal coating to asphalt paving surfaces and repair the surface cracks.

A-16 – Waterworks

In short, this classification allows to perform all necessary work for the production and distribution of water including drilling well, setting casing and pumps, etc.

A -17 – Electrical and transmission lines

To clarify, this classification allows to install, alter, and repair of transmission lines on public right-of-ways.

A-19 – Swimming pools including solar

In short, this classification allows the licensee to perform the same scope of work permitted by the A-9 but also includes installation and repair of solar heating devices.

General commercial contracting

B-1 – General commercial contractor

In short, this classification allows to construct, alter, and repair in connection with any structure built, being built, or to be built.

B-2 – General small commercial contractor

To clarify, for projects of $2,000,000 or less including labor and materials, this classification allows to perform commercial construction in connection with any new structure or addition built, being built, or to be built.

Residential contracting

B-General residential contractor

To clarify, this classification allows the licensee to construct and repair all or any part of a residential structure or appurtenance.

B-3 – General remodeling and repair contractor

To clarify, this classification allows to remodel and repair an existing residential structure or appurtenance except for electrical, plumbing, mechanical, boilers, swimming pools, spas, and water wells.

B-4 – General residential engineering contractor

To clarify, this classification allows to construct and repair of appurtenances to residential structures.

B-5 – General swimming pool contractor

In short, this classification allows to construct and repair of swimming pools and spas.

B-5R Swimming Pool Covers

B-6 – General swimming pool contractor, including solar

In short, this classification allows the licensee to perform the same scope of work permitted by the B-5 but also includes installation and repair of solar heating devices.

B-10 – Pre-manufactures spas and hot tubs

In short, this classification allows to construct and repair of spas and hot tubs.

Specialty residential contracting

R-1A – Acoustical systems

In short, this classification allows the licensee to install and repair pre-manufactured acoustical ceiling and wall systems.

R-2 – Excavating, grading, and oil surfacing

In short, this classification allows to apply oil surfacing or other similar products and place shoring, casing, geotextiles, or liners to move, alter or repair earthen materials by digging, trenching, grading, horizontal boring, compacting, filling.

R-3 – Awnings, canopies, carports, and patio covers

To clarify, this classification allows to place concrete footings and concrete slabs to install and repair window awnings, door hoods, freestanding or attached canopies, carport, and patio covers constructed of metal, fabric, fiberglass, or plastic, screened and paneled enclosures, which are not intended for use as habitable spaces, using metal panels, plastic inserts, and screen doors. A minimum of 60% of the wall area of an enclosure shall be constructed of screening material. Fascia panels, flashing and skirting, exterior, detached metal storage units, not to exceed 200 square feet.

R-4 – Boilers, including solar

To clarify, this classification allows to install, alter, and repair of steam and hot water systems and boilers.

R-6 – Swimming pool service and repair

To clarify, this classification allows to service and performs minor repair of residential pools and accessories.

R-7- Carpentry

In short, this classification allows to install and repair rough carpentry, finish carpentry, hardware, millwork, metal studs, metal doors or door frames, and windows.

R-8 – Floor covering

In short, this classification allows to prepare a surface to install and repair the following floor covering materials carpet, floor tile, wood, linoleum, vinyl, asphalt, rubber, concrete coatings.

R-9 – Concrete

In short, this classification allows to install and repair of concrete, concrete products, and accessories.

R-10 – Drywall

In short, this classification allows to install and repair gypsum wallboard, ceiling grid systems as supporting members for the gypsum drywall, movable partitions, wallboard tape, and texture, non-load bearing, lightweight, steel wall partitions.

R-11 – Electrical

In short, this classification allows to install and repair residential electrical systems.

R-12 – Elevators

In short, this classification allows to install and repair elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, moving walks and ramps, stage and orchestra lifts.

R-13 – Asphalt paving

Moreover, this classification allows to install and repair of paved areas using materials and methods common to the industry.

R-14 – Fencing

In short, this classification allows to install and repair metal, wood, and cement block fencing, automatic gates, fire access strobes, cattle guards, low voltage U.L. approved electrical fence protective devices of less than 25 volts and 100 watts.

R-15- Blasting

To clarify, this classification allows to drill, bore, move earth, and build temporary shelters or barricades by using explosive devices for excavation, demolition, construction-related blasting.

R-16- Fire protection systems

To clarify, this classification allows to install and repair fire prevention and fire protection systems including all required mechanical apparatus.

R-17- Structural steel and aluminum

To clarify, this classification allows to install and repair architectural and structural steel and aluminum materials.

R-21 – Hardscaping and irrigation systems

In short, this classification allows the licensee to install, alter, and repair non-loadbearing concrete; uncovered patios, walkways, driveways made of brick, stone, pavers, or gravel; wooden decks no higher than 29 inches above finish grade; decorative garden walls up to six feet from finish grade; fences and screens up to six feet from finish grade; retaining walls up to three feet from the finish grade of the lower elevation; freestanding fire pits, fireplaces, or barbeques; low voltage landscape lighting; water features that are not attached to swimming pools; irrigation systems; residential outdoor misting systems; freestanding and uncovered outdoor kitchens

R-22 – House moving

In short, this classification allows to disconnect utilities, but the connection is not permitted.

R-24 – Ornamental metals

In short, this classification allows to install, alter, or repair non-structural ornamental metal, such as metal folding gates; guards, and handrails; wrought iron fencing, and gates; window shutters and grilles; room dividers and shields; metal accessories common to the industry.

R-31 – Masonry

In short, this classification allows to do everything with reinforcing steel as required for the licensee to install and repair masonry; brick; concrete block; insulating concrete forms; adobe units; stone; marble; slate; mortar-free masonry products.

R-34 – Painting and wall covering

To clarify, this classification allows to perform surface preparation to install, apply, and repair wallpaper; wall covering cloth; wall covering vinyl; decorative texture; paint; liquid floor and wall coatings.

R-36 – Plastering

To clarify, this classification allows to install laths, metal studs, etc.

R-37 – Plumbing, including solar

In short, this classification allows to install and repair of water and gas piping systems, fire protection as it relates to water sprinkler systems, and sewage treatment systems.

Moreover, this scope includes all R-37R sub-classifications.

R-45 – Sheet metal

To clarify, this classification allows to install and repair sheet metal, cornices, flashings, gutters, leaders, pans, kitchen equipment, ductwork, skylights, patented chimneys, metal flues, metal roofing systems.

R-48 – Ceramic, plastic, and metal tile

R-62 – Minor home improvements

To clarify, for projects of $5,000 or less including labor and materials, this classification allows to perform remodeling, repairs, and improvements to existing structures or appurtenances.

R-65 – Glazing

In short, this classification allows to install and repair weatherproofing, caulking, sealants, and adhesives to assemble, install and repair glass products, window film, window treatments, such as blinds or shutters, steel and aluminum glass holding members.

R-67 – Low voltage communication systems

In short, this classification allows to build antenna towers on existing structures to install, service, and repair alarm systems, telephone systems, sound systems, intercommunication systems, public addressing systems, television or video systems, low voltage signaling devices, low voltage landscape lighting that does not exceed 91 volts, master and program clocks.

R-70 – Reinforcing bar and wire mesh

To clarify, this classification allows to install and repair reinforcing bar, post-tension, and wire mesh.
